Scale

I am currently working on a project where I am scaling up my painting.

I am using large loose brushstrokes still working in a monotone colour palette. Seeing one unknown image taken out of context can trigger a narrative, and seen on a larger scale can be unsettling. As the size increases, the understanding of the narrative does not get closer, it still feels out of reach. I intend to increase the scale significantly, so that the figures are seen life size. I was influenced by the magnificent emotional paintings at Tate Modern, in Marlene Dumas: The Image as a Burden and read the book The Image as a Burden that was published to accompany the exhibition. I was also excited by the large painterly canvases of  Luc Tuymans in The Shore at David Zwirner.
